P&C Insurance 201: A Deeper Dive [Virtual]

Produced by the Knowledge Center, expert training from S&P Global Market Intelligence

P&C Insurance 201 is a companion virtual course to the introductory Insurance 101, and takes a more in depth look at the property-casualty industry. While it is a follow-on to the previous 101 session, it also can be a stand-alone presentation for those who already have some familiarity with the industry. Stated another way, you don’t have to have participated in the previous 101 presentation to benefit from Insurance 201.

Starting with the premise that participants have a basic knowledge of the business, this presentation looks more closely at the workings of the personal, commercial and reinsurance lines. Regarding reinsurance, the discussion will focus on the new tools in the business and how they are being used by insurers and investors.

In addition, we will focus more closely on how industry reserves develop and introduce some of the standard tests that are used to analyze reserves. That way, participants will be able to understand the logic underlying projections of future reserve development.

Finally, in conjunction with looking at the long term results of the industry, we will explore what it takes for a company to improve its profitability.

As with the 101 session, this presentation is designed to make the more complicated topics in the industry relatively easy to understand.

Participants should leave the course with a broader understanding of:

  • How the major lines of business operate
  • The linkage between underwriting and investment strategies
  • What it takes for a company to improve its results
