Somewhere In Southern Africa, Our Data Shapes Policy

The name S&P Global means providing essential intelligence to companies, governments and individuals to make decisions with conviction. This isn’t mere talk. Our data and analytics move the markets and help shape policy across the globe.

Case in point: the South African Council for Geoscience recently signed on as subscribers to SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence. The reason? They need our data on exploration budgets both within South Africa and neighboring countries to guide the South African Department of Mineral Resources in policymaking and tracking mining investment in the country.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the custodian for South Africa’s mineral wealth and is the ministry responsible for promoting and regulating minerals and mining for transformation, growth and development. The Council for Geoscience guides the ministry in making the right choices to attract investment in the mining sector and the broader economy and provides benchmarks against neighboring African countries and other global mining economies such as Canada, Australia, the United States and Chile.

As the South Africa government works towards re-energizing its mining sector, and engaging with mining companies on its proposed mining charter, high quality data and analysis provided by SNL, make for better informed decision making.

"The data that we provide the council will play a role in shaping South African policy on mining and mineral exploration," said Senior Director of Metals & Mining Yash Pandey. "It will assist the Department of Mineral Resources with their mission to ensure all South Africans derive sustainable benefit from the country’s mineral wealth.”

Yash also noted that the unique nature of our product enables us to contribute to policy making. “It also demonstrates the strength of our product offerings — we are the only company in the world that tracks this exploration data set, auditing nearly 3,000 companies globally,” he said.

The deal with the South African Council for Geoscience isn’t the only example of our products shaping a better world. The SNL Metals & Mining team, commissioned by The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), assessed the potential procurement market size for goods and services in the Southern African mining sector. Based on our coverage of mines and projects in the region, we provided a comprehensive analysis[1] for increasing domestic value creation in the mining sector for Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia. Shaping policy, driven by our in-depth data,  assists countries to capitalize on their mineral wealth.
