A global upswing has taken hold over the last year with emerging markets widely seen as the biggest beneficiaries of the rebound in global growth. For South Africa, however, 2017 was a mixed year with lackluster growth, growing fiscal and governance concerns, and further ratings downgrades. As 2017 drew to a close, South Africa’s ruling party picked a new leader and hopes are high that the country will be brought back from the brink of crisis.
